Deciphering Alzheimer's.
Our groundbreaking Alzheimer research focuses on the role of marine biotechnological solutions in combating neurodegenerative diseases. We explore the potential of seaweed-derived compounds to inhibit amyloid-beta plaque formation, a key factor in Alzheimer's progression. This innovative approach could pave the way for new, effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease.
Seaweed Therapy.
The project "Seaweed Therapy: Tackling LOAD" explores seaweed's potential to prevent and treat Late Onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD) by 2050. By promoting its rich nutritional content, including ω-3 VLC-PUFAs, in low- and middle-income countries, the project supports the "Nutritional Deficiency Hypothesis" as an alternative to the traditional Alzheimer's approach.
Challenges to face.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive and functional decline, linked to amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and tau-protein tangles. While research has focused on Aβ, AD is more complex, involving Aβ, tau, and neuroinflammation. Genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors also contribute, but our understanding remains incomplete. To develop effective treatments, research must expand beyond Aβ to include emerging theories like the foetal origin and nutritional deficiency hypotheses. With AD’s economic burden projected to reach $10-13.5 trillion by 2050, innovative, multi-faceted approaches are crucial for improving patient outcomes.
